Austin & Larson Tax Resolution
Tax Lawyer In Oceola Township, MI
Austin & Larson Tax Resolution represents Oceola Township taxpayers against the IRS and the Michigan Department of Treasury. No tax law office sits inside the township, so the work runs out of our Brighton office at 812 W. Grand River Ave. Our team is tax attorneys, CPAs and IRS Enrolled Agents.
The Three Envelopes Test: which tax problem you actually have
Before you hire anyone, sort the paper. 3 separate governments can send you a tax notice in Oceola Township. They share no staff, no deadlines, and no appeal route. Hire for the wrong one and you pay for the wrong service.
Read the letterhead and the return address.
Envelope 1 is from Oceola Township, 1577 N. Latson Rd., Howell
This is your property tax bill or your annual assessment notice. It is about the value of your land and house. The people who fix it are the assessor and the March Board of Review, and after that the Michigan Tax Tribunal. It is not an IRS problem and no IRS lawyer can touch it.
Envelope 2 is from the Michigan Department of Treasury, Lansing
This is state income tax, sales or use tax, or withholding. It moves through a Letter of Inquiry, a Notice of Intent to Assess, and then a Bill for Taxes Due. Michigan can lien, levy your bank account, and garnish your wages on 10 days notice.
Envelope 3 is from the Internal Revenue Service
Back taxes, an audit, a CP504, a Final Notice of Intent to Levy, a balance you have been rolling for 4 years. Federal rules, federal appeal rights, federal collection standards.
We handle envelopes 2 and 3. Envelope 1 has its own map, and the next 2 sections are it, because half the people searching this keyword are holding envelope 1 and do not know it yet.
Tax Debt is Often
Intimidating
Frustrating
Confusing
Embarrassing
Stressful
… But it Doesn’t Have to Be
Your 2026 Michigan return will not match your federal return
This is the piece missing from every Oceola-targeted page we found, and it will produce wrong returns this filing season.
Public Act 24 of 2025, signed 7 October 2025, moved Michigan’s conformity date to 1 January 2025 and then deliberately decoupled the state from several of the 2025 federal changes. Michigan does not follow the new federal bonus depreciation rules, the immediate expensing of research and experimental costs, the expanded interest limitation, the qualified production property rules, or the expanded Section 179 limits. Those apply for tax years beginning after 31 December 2024, so they are already live.
The same act pulled in 2 new deductions. Michigan now allows deductions for qualified tips and qualified overtime, matching the federal amount, but only for tax years beginning after 31 December 2025 and before 1 January 2029. That is 2026, 2027 and 2028, and nothing for 2025. Nonresidents can only deduct what is attributable to work performed in Michigan.
The practical risk is small and mean. Software that imports the federal return and calls it a Michigan return will file a wrong one in 2026, and the notice arrives 14 months later with interest already running. If you have equipment depreciation, R&E costs, a pass-through entity, tip income or regular overtime, the Michigan return needs its own set of eyes this year. That is a tax lawyer in Michigan question rather than an Oceola one, and it applies statewide.
Who We Are, And Who We Are Not
Austin & Larson Tax Resolution is a Michigan firm with offices in Brighton, Saginaw, Lansing and Jackson. The Brighton office at 812 W. Grand River Ave. covers Oceola Township, Hartland Township, Howell, Pinckney and the rest of Livingston County. The team is tax attorneys, CPAs and IRS Enrolled Agents, and cases get staffed by what they need rather than by who answered the phone.
What we do: IRS collection and audit representation, installment agreements, offers in compromise, penalty abatement, currently not collectible status, lien and levy release, unfiled returns, payroll tax liabilities, and the State of Michigan versions of all of it.
What we do not do: property tax assessment appeals, Board of Review protests, Michigan Tax Tribunal valuation work, or estate planning. The sections above are the honest answer there, and a valuation practice will serve you better.
We are also the wrong call on a small balance. If you owe the IRS a few thousand dollars, are current on your filings, and can pay inside 72 months, you can set that up yourself on irs.gov in about 20 minutes and you should. Call us when a levy has landed, when returns are missing, or when the IRS and Michigan are both moving at once.

Oceola is in Livingston County
Type “tax lawyer in Oceola Township” into Google and the first page hands you Osceola County, 2 hours north, and Oceana County, out on the lakeshore. Neither one is where you live.
Oceola Township sits in Livingston County, between Howell and Hartland. Township hall is at 1577 N. Latson Rd. in Howell. The township has a supervisor, a clerk, a treasurer named Christine Andrews and an assessor named Bonny L. Moore, who holds the Michigan Advanced Assessing Officer certification. What it does not have is a tax bar. Nobody practices tax law inside the township line.
So you are not hiring in Oceola. You are hiring in Brighton or Howell and driving, or signing a Form 2848 and sending it to somebody who will never set foot in the township. Both are fine. Just know which one you are doing, because a national shop that bought the keyword has no idea whether your school district line reads Hartland or Howell.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a tax lawyer located in Oceola Township?
No. Oceola Township has a supervisor, clerk, treasurer and assessor at 1577 N. Latson Rd. in Howell, and no law practice inside the township line. Tax representation for Oceola residents comes out of Brighton or Howell, or from a firm you authorise remotely with a Form 2848 power of attorney.
My Oceola property tax bill jumped. Can you appeal it?
No, and that is the right answer rather than a polite one. Property assessment appeals start with the township assessor, then the March Board of Review, then the Michigan Tax Tribunal. We handle IRS and State of Michigan tax debt. Call the Oceola assessing office at (517) 546-3259 first and ask for your parcel record card.
Why is my neighbour’s tax bill lower than mine in the same township?
Most likely the school district. 2 districts split Oceola Township, and the total homestead millage differs by more than 4 mills between them. A principal residence exemption on one parcel and not the other produces an even wider gap. Neither one is an error, and neither one is appealable.
I missed the summer tax deadline. What happens now?
Interest is added at 1% on the 1st of each month after the due date. On 1 March the unpaid summer and winter bills move to the Livingston County Treasurer, which adds a 4% administration fee and its own interest. Call the township treasurer before that date, not a lawyer.
Do you handle both the IRS and the State of Michigan?
Yes, and usually together. They are separate agencies with separate rules, but they surface at the same time and a resolution on one can change what is available on the other. Michigan will consider an offer in compromise on the ground that the IRS already accepted a federal offer, which is a reason to sequence the 2 cases rather than run them independently.
Can you actually settle my tax debt for less than I owe?
Sometimes, and far less often than the advertising suggests. The IRS accepted 14.1% of the offers in compromise it received in fiscal year 2025. Whether you qualify comes down to income, assets, and allowable expenses under IRS standards that are set by county. We run that math before you engage and tell you if the answer is no.
Do I have to come to the Brighton office?
No. Most of our Livingston County work runs by phone, email and secure upload, and the power of attorney does not require you in the room. The Brighton office is there if you would rather sit down with someone, and some people prefer that for the first meeting.
How long does this take?
Collection cases run months rather than weeks. An installment agreement can be in place quickly once transcripts and filings are current. An offer in compromise takes far longer and may end in a rejection you can appeal. We give a realistic window at the written plan stage rather than on the first call.
Free Consultation, Not a Sales Call
Bring the notice and roughly what you owe. In 15 minutes we tell you which of the 3 systems sent it, what your realistic options are, and whether you need us at all. If it turns out to be an Oceola Township assessment, we say so and point you at the assessor, and that call costs you nothing. If it is the IRS or Michigan Treasury, you get the collection potential math in writing before you pay anything.
